GREETINGS from CHUCK ZEUREN

Hello fellow Jazz Fans and Musicians....welcome to my home page. I'm glad you all made it through the first chorus and I hope that you'll hang in long enough to finish the tune. Throughout the solos you'll get to know just a little bit more about me, my latest projects and my musical life. After all, these days, acquaintances that begin in cyberspace are often the most real, vivid, and long-lasting - and maybe that will be true of us.

Along the way and throughout the various key changes, I hope to offer some of my musical ideas and some viewson issues that, I find, have affected not only the way JAZZ music has evolved but also the lives and professions of many of my contemporaries. For all of you drum students, I hope to include articles on the history of the drums and, due to popular demand and numerous requests, an article entitled "TIPS ON TUNING". This article along with one dedicated to
"FEEL"
is finally here. You may access these, and a few others, through my "Hang" page. You'll find the link at the bottom of this page..one of the buttons..or click on the word "articles"..above. On a page entitled "Grooves"(NEW DIDDY), I intend to throw in some of my favorite grooves and technical ideas. This page will include links to different areas which will include some technical and musical suggestions...similar to drum lessons, online. And what would a drummer's site be without a page devoted to his/her setup. Here, you will be interested in seeing that, due to years of research, I have discovered some pretty innovative ways of using the drums for reasons other than making music. Along the way, stop in and visit my "Sounds" page for some audio samples of some recent recordings and now including ....audio samples from a recently released CD on the RED RECORDS label entitled "WHY NOT??"...check out a recent review from my new page entitled "Reviews". In order for us all to exchange and discuss our own, very personal musical ideas, I have added a discussion page which is called "The Bashboard". Here, we all will be able to, interactively, exchange ideas concerning our thoughts on the state of jazz, drumming and any other relative issue. Your comments are extremely welcome. Along with "The Bashboard", I have recently decided to add a page entitled "Announcements".. . This page will include any pertinent info. concerning upcoming gigs or information on issues I wish to remain readily available to you. Be sure to "CHECK IT OUT"! You can access the "Announcements" page by clicking on the button at the bottom entitled "CHECK IT OUT" or if you are into taking chances, click on any of the untitled buttons and travel at your own risk. Regardless of whichever way we play this tune, I welcome any input from all of you and hope that we, as a band, can inspire each other and make some of the best music in cyberspace.

Before we get into the "swing", let me tell you a little bit about myself.

ZEUREN'S BACKGROUND

Chuck Zeuren attended and graduated from Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA. where he met and played with such jazz luminaries as John Scofield, Joe Lovano, Gary Burton etc. Soon after graduation, Chuck moved to New York City and while continuing his playing and gigging relationships with Scofield and Lovano, he got involved in the New York Jazz Loft Scene. Here he met and played with Mike Brecker, Randy Brecker, Dave Liebman, Bob Mintzer, Jerry Bergonzi, Tom Harrell, Pepper Adams, Cecil Payne and many others. Chuck joined the band led by Paul Jeffreys, Theolonious Monk's protege and tenor player. This lead to an orientation throughout many of New York City's most famous jazz clubs. He then, in the late 70's, joined the Lionel Hampton Orchestra for what became a 2 year stint. Coming off the road with Hampton, he worked with the late, great Chet Baker's quartet, again throughout some of New York's most prestigious jazz clubs.

Zeuren attended The City University of New York (Graduate program in Jazz Composition) during the late 80's at which time he met and performed with more of the Jazz world's most prodigious members....Jimmy Heath, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter etc..

For the past 15 years he has performed on numerous jingles, Broadway shows, CD's and albums as a sideman and in the early 90's recorded his first CD as a leader. Entitled "Zeuren", the CD was released in 1996 on the Monad Jazz label and met with instant acclaim. It remained on the national jazz charts for many weeks and eventually reached the top 25, nationwide. "Zeuren" was featured during the month of November 1996, on Puerto Rico's largest jazz radio station, that of the University of El San Juan, as part of the celebration of Puerto Rico's "National Month of Percussion". In addition, "Zeuren" was chosen as "Star CD of the Month" for the July 97 issue of "Le Jazz" (Paris, France) and more recently, Chuck's professional experiences have been featured in an article in the Feb./March 1998 issue of "Jazz Player Magazine". Whatever the project, he has continuously received praise from both fellow musicians and critics alike.

Along with touring throughout Europe and the US and recording with his own band, Zeuren continues to work as a sideman with some of the world's most renown jazz musicians....He recently performed on world renown jazz drummer/vocalist Grady Tate's latest CD and performed on and wrote string arrangements for a CD due out soon which features the late great jazz vocalist, Etta Jones. In addition, a Zeuren led quintet session entitled "Why Not??" has been recently released on the RED RECORDS label to numerous rave reviews.....check them out!
