[MONAD RECORDS]

After John Favicchia's CD, reviewed in our previous issue, here is another recording led by a drummer. Chuck Zeuren is one of those leaders who doesn't try to impose his views on the other musicians. He seems to see himself as a link between the other individuals in the group, and clearly is a great listener. Zeuren played extensively with John Scofield and Joe Lovano, toured with the Lionel Hampton big band, was Chet Baker's drummer in New York during the late 70's. Among his partners for this album, we find above all Ken Hitchcock known for his stay with the Louie Bellson big band. He gives the full measure of his talent on Pooh-Oh-Do-Oh, where Chuck Zeuren provides spirited dialogue. Latin jazz alternates with ballads and contemporary jazz on this CD, recorded in 1990 and released in 1996 to reach the top 25 of the American jazz charts. (ALR)
